About Matt Phillips

Originally a Strength & Conditioning coach with the National Academy Of Sports Medicine, Matt turned his attention to Sports Therapy back in 2004, and became part of a multidisciplinary team on the South Coast of England that included Sports Therapists, Massage Therapists, Physiotherapists, Podiatrists and Osteopaths. A keen runner himself (famed for running multiple marathons & half marathons in a blue morph suit), Matt started specialising with distance runners, and become very aware of the high levels of contradicting advice & misconceptions that exist in the running industry. He therefore created the website www.runchatlive.com to try and help both runners & clinicians evolve from outdated ideas and embrace a more evidence-based approach to running injury prevention & management.

Running Gait Analysis & Runchatlive Podcast

As an established writer for multiple running magazines & websites, and a popular speaker at many national conferences, Matt was invited in 2018 to Kenya to help set up the first 3D Gait Analysis lab in Nairobi for the company Run Beyond. This prompted him to create Runchatlive Podcast, interviewing specialists from Running Injury & performance from all around the world. Matt offers a Running Gait Analysis CPD Course exclusively for The ST School, details of which can be found here.

Communication & Behaviour Change Course

Alongside his clinical work, Matt has an extensive background in Further Education, where he supports both neurotypical and neurodivergent individuals in overcoming learning challenges and developing effective communication skills within educational and professional environments. His CPD course, Communication & Behaviour Change Skills for Clinical Practice, combines evidence‑based communication techniques with practical behaviour change models, equipping musculoskeletal clinicians with a range of approaches to help patients and clients adopt positive, meaningful, and sustainable behaviour change.

Neurodivergent MSK Clinician Facebook Group

Early in 2026, Matt created the Facebook group “Neurodivergent MSK Clinicians” to provide a safe, non-judgemental and supportive space for MSK clinicians who identify as neurodivergent, with or without formal diagnosis. Although UK based, clinicians from all countries are warmly welcomed, as diversity of experience and perspective makes the community stronger. The group aims to share experiences and challenges, offer advice and practical tips, celebrate strengths and successes, discuss strategies for thriving in clinical practice.

The STA Clinician Podcast

The Covid Pandemic left a lot of soft tissue therapists with more questions than answers, so Matt decided in late 2020 to create the ‘STA Clinician Podcast‘ (originally called the ‘Sports Therapy Association Podcast’), a weekly live podcast with special guests from the world of soft tissue therapy, aimed at helping therapists gently evolve to bring their business in more in line with modern evidence informed  practice. Matt is super aware of how scary and frustrating social media can be for therapists, and the Sports Therapy Association (founded by Gary Benson in early 2014) does a fantastic job as a professional association that truly cares for its members and our industry. All episodes of the podcast are available on your favourite podcast apps including Apple, Spotify and YouTube!

And so much more…

There is so much more we could tell you about Matt, but space is running low. He was an integral part in the creation and delivery of our ‘Hands On Hub & STA Conference’ in Exmouth, which we thank him for immensely. He has been a hugely popular speaker at Therapy Expo since it first started, now called The Therapy Show, held annually at the NEC in Birmingham.
